Kathleen Vigness-Raposa, Ph.D., is the Vice President of Environmental Programs and a Senior Scientist at Marine Acoustics, Inc., where she oversees the strategic planning and program management of projects and personnel. She has performed analytical and experimental modeling to predict and quantify sound exposures of marine mammals using MAI’s Acoustic Integration Model©, the outputs of which she weaves into environmental impact documentation addressing the effects of underwater sounds from acoustic systems, aircraft, and explosive weapon. She has also conducted biological research and analyses to derive distribution and abundance estimates for acoustic experiments around the world. Dr. Vigness-Raposa is the co-PI of the “Discovery of Sound in the Sea” project, which won the ASA Science Writing Award for Media other than Articles in 2007

Dr. James Miller is a Professor of Ocean Engineering and Oceanography at the University of Rhode Island. He conducts research and teaches courses in acoustical oceanography, sonar systems engineering, acoustic signal processing, underwater acoustics, marine bio-acoustics, ocean data analysis, modeling, and underwater vehicle design. His interests include the acoustics of ocean sediments, 3D acoustic propagation in shallow water and the effects of sea surface waves on acoustic normal modes. He has done work on the effects of ocean noise on marine animals. He is a registered Professional Engineer in the State of Rhode Island and is a co-founded FarSounder, Inc. of Warwick, Rhode Island, with URI alumnus Matt Zimmerman.
