Animals and Sound in the Sea
Sound Production and Reception
How do marine animals produce sounds?
Many marine animals (including mammals, fish and invertebrates) make underwater sounds. The sounds that these animals make depend on their physiology. For example, dolphins are able to make clicking sounds using mechanisms in their foreheads while some fishes can make squeaking sounds by rubbing body parts together. Many marine animals produce sounds in order to communicate with other organisms whether it be to find a mate or as protection against predators. Sounds are also produced during feeding and to help navigate underwater.
